Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 3269

This hadith about the Messenger among you centers on the ayah, “And know that among you there is the Messenger of Allah. If he were to obey you in much of the matter, you would surely be in trouble.” Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri recited the ayah and explained that this was the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, the one who received revelation. He also mentioned the best of their leaders, saying that if the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم had obeyed them in many matters, they would have faced trouble. Then he asked, “So how about you people today?” The hadith reminds us that guidance is not based on every public wish or opinion. Revelation gives safety, while unchecked human pressure can lead to harm.

What we learn from this hadith

  • The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was guided by revelation, not by every request from people.
  • Human opinion can lead to trouble when it goes against sound guidance.
  • Leaders need wisdom and should not simply follow pressure.
  • Abu Sa’eed used the ayah to remind later people to be careful.
