Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 3268
This hadith about not insulting with nicknames explains the reason connected to the ayah, “Nor insult with nicknames.” Abu Jubairah bin Ad-Dahhak said that a man among them might be known by two or three names. Sometimes he would be called by a name that he disliked. Then this ayah was revealed. The hadith gives a direct and practical lesson about speech. A name may seem small to the person saying it, but it can hurt the person being called by it. Islam teaches respect in how people address each other. The narration does not discuss every kind of nickname; it focuses on names that a person dislikes. So the clear teaching is to avoid calling people by names that insult, annoy, or belittle them.
What we learn from this hadith
- Do not call someone by a name they dislike.
- Speech can hurt even when it sounds small to the speaker.
- The ayah forbids insulting people through nicknames.
- Respect includes how we address one another.
