Summary of Sunan an-Nasai Hadith 5146

This hadith about male adornment again reports the Prophet SAW holding silk and gold and saying that these two are forbidden for the males of his Ummah. Its strength for the reader is its plain wording. The items are specific, and the group addressed is specific. The focus is not on wealth in general, nor on every kind of clothing. It is on silk and gold as worn or used by men in adornment. The report also includes a note from Abu Abdur-Rahman about the more correct version of the chain, which reminds students of hadith that narrations are preserved with care. For daily life, the lesson is simple: a Muslim man should avoid what the Prophet SAW forbade.

What we learn from this hadith

  • The text identifies silk and gold as the two items being discussed.
  • The Prophet SAW connects the rule to males of his Ummah.
  • The narration shows care in preserving wording and chains.
  • Muslim men should not treat forbidden adornment as a small issue.
